Signs you may have a termite problem
Before treatment can begin, an inspection confirms whether termites are present and which species is involved. Common indicators include:
- Mud shelter tubes running along walls, pipes, or skirting boards. A hallmark of subterranean termites moving between soil and timber
- Hollow-sounding wood when tapped, particularly door frames, floorboards, and structural beams.
- Frass (termite droppings): small pellets resembling coarse sand, often found near window sills or below door frames; a sign of drywood termites.
- Discarced wings near light sources after a swarm. Flying termites shed their wings shortly after emerging.
- Blistered or darkened timber surfaces that may look like water damage but have no moisture source
If you have identified damage, our page on termite damage covers what different species typically attack and what repair involves.
Termite treatment methods used in Singapore
The appropriate termite control method depends on the species, the extent of activity, and whether the building is under construction or already occupied. Anticimex uses four main methods, which are sometimes combined.
Termite control for HDB flats, condominiums and landed properties
Termite activity occurs across all property types in Singapore. The species involved and the accessible treatment options differ by property structure.
- HDB flats and condominiums: are typically affected by drywood termites in timber furniture, window frames, and parquet flooring. Subterranean termites are less common in mid-to-high-rise units. Treatment usually involves dusting accessible workings, targeted corrective treatment at entry points, and above-ground baiting for active colonies. Coordination with building management may be required for common-area infestations.
- Landed properties: have direct soil contact and are exposed to subterranean termite foraging from the ground. In-ground baiting systems and corrective soil treatment are the primary long-term methods. Properties with a history of subterranean activity benefit from annual monitoring even after successful treatment.
- Commercial premises and new construction: for businesses, termite activity in a food-and-beverage, logistics, or hospitality environment carries compliance implications beyond structural damage. Pre-construction treatment is standard practice for all new commercial builds in Singapore. For existing premises, see our business pest control solutions.
